Amateur Winemaker's Competition - Class 79

The Province of Ontario, through the L.L.B.O. has authorized the Drumbo Agricultural Society (DAS) to hold an Amateur Winemaker's Competition with the co-operation of the Amateur Winemakers of Ontario (AWO). It is legal to transport homemade wine from the exhibitor's home to the Fair, either in the trunk of a car or in the back of a truck.

Entry Date and Times: Wines will be received at the Drumbo Agricultural Hall on Thursday, September 12th after 4:00 p.m.

Judging and Tasting: At the Drumbo Agricultural Hall commences at 7:00 p.m. same day. Judge: Peter Ferguson.

Rules:

  1. All exhibitors shall have a current DAS membership. One bottle per section may be entered.
  2. All wines must be made by an amateur winemaker. The entire winemaking process will be done in their home.
  3. Wines must be in 750 ml round wine bottles with cork or screw top. Sparkling wines must be in proper pressure-type wine bottles, minimum 700 ml with wired down stoppers.
  4. Still wines will be judged at room temperature, sparkling wines at refrigerator temperature.
  5. Any identification on the bottle will be covered over and an entry tag will be placed on the bottle.
  6. Judging will be based on: Colour; Clarity; Bouquet and Flavour; and Balance and Quality.
  7. Competitors and one companion of legal age may attend and participate in the tasting of the wines under direction of the judge and committee.
  8. All entries will be disposed of according to L.L.B.O. rules after judging. The empty bottles will be on display during the fair. Bottles may be picked up on the Sunday after 4:30 p.m.

  1. White Table Wine - from grape or concentrate. Bone dry to medium dry, and range from almost colourless to pale gold. These are wines to be drunk with lighter flavoured foods.
  2. Red Table Wine - from grape or concentrate. Intended to be drunk with richly flavoured meats. Medium to full body.
  3. Rosé Table Wine - from grape or concentrate. Intended to be drunk with food. Pale pink, orange, purple and light red are acceptable colours. Light to medium body.
  4. Social Wine - from grape, juice or concentrate. The wine is intended to be drunk on its own rather than in the accompaniment of food. May be any colour and may include flavouring.
  5. Country Wine - 95 to 100% non-grape ingredients. May be dry or sweet.
  6. After Dinner Wine - may be Sherry, Maderia and Port type wines.
  7. Sparkling Wine - from any ingredients and should have an attractive colour.
  8. Wine Bottle Label - made by the exhibitor and shown attached on an empty wine bottle. To be voted on by fairgoers. Balloting to close Saturday, September 21st at 5 p.m.
